Tips For The Diabetic At A Chinese Restaurant

by Gabriel Nichols

If you have diabetes, eating at different restaurants can prove to be confusing and difficult. You may have even given up on the idea of every having Chinese food again. However, if you take some time to look over the menu, choose wisely, and ask if alternates are available you should be just fine. The next time your friends want to go to a Chinese restaurant, you can agree to go! Follow these tips and you will be able to satisfy your craving without destroying your blood sugar level.

Order the Soup

While Americans don't always order soup as an appetizer, it is always served as part of a Chinese meal. Part of the reason for this is because it helps people fill up so they do not overeat during the rest of the meal. This is a good option for diabetics. Choose a clear broth soup like egg drop or hot and sour to save your carbs for the entree.

Substitute the Rice

Your entree is going to be served with either some type of rice or noodle. Ask if they will substitute white rice for brown rice. This will provide you with more nutrients and fiber. If the restaurant does not offer brown rice, be aware of how much white rice is on your plate and limit the amount you eat. You can also ask to have only a small portion served to you.

Sauces on the Side

Almost every Chinese dish has a sauce on it. Some of the sauces have sugar in them and almost all have some type of thickening agent that is basically carbs. Ask to have the sauce on the side so you can decide whether or not to use it. Most dishes are quite delicious without any or very little sauce.

Choose the Veggies

When it comes to choosing a main entree, choose one with a lot of vegetables. In fact, you could ask for more veggies and less meat in the dish. While you should have some type of protein, the majority of your plate should be filled with nutritious, fiber-filled vegetables. If steamed veggies are offered as a side dish, order them and then split a meat entree with one of your companions.

Eating at a Chinese restaurant may mean you have to give up the fired dumplings, and sweet and sour pork, but you can still enjoy a diabetic friendly meal when you choose right. And don't forget the chopsticks! They will allow you to eat slower so you feel fuller before you empty the plate.
